Established in 2006 by a self-styled group of sports fanatics, Betway has come a long way in a relatively short time and now provides a range of online gaming options that covers a casino, a poker room and a bingo site. It is their sportsbook which we will focus on here, however, with its 30,000+ betting markets, fine in-play betting provision and great range of offers.

Licensed and regulated by the Lotteries and Gaming Authority of Malta, Betway’s sportsbook is a neat and tidy betting site with a good number of features designed to enhance your betting experience. From their live streaming of sporting events to the “Useful Stats” section, the people behind Betway have clearly tried to pull out all the stops to ensure you get a smooth and enjoyable time of it when you visit them.

Horse Finder

Betway Horse FinderBetway have a neat horse racing filter called Horse finder which can help you make your selections for the day. You can search for a horse by name or from scrolling through the A-Z list but you can also apply certain conditions to narrow down what to back.

There are sixteen filter options to whittle down the runners including finishing well last time out, distance winner, course winner, winner in the last three races, hampered last race, jockey or trainer in form, dropped in class and draw bias. You can apply this to all the UK and Irish meetings that day or to a particular meeting. Timeform provide the horse racing form for the site and you can also apply a minimum star rating to your search. A green star indicates which of the filter conditions is currently the most popular being used.

Using this same function you can also see which horse have been the best backed that day, giving you their original and current odds, sorting by the biggest percentage decrease in price.

The graphic in the centre of the screen shows how many horse that day meet the criteria you have added, starting with all the horses running that day. This is useful because you may find that you have narrowed those available sufficiently before you add additional filters.

There is an ‘Add to Betslip’ button on the bottom of the horse finder so you you won’t need to find your selections again in order to place your bet on them.

Betway have put a lot of time and effort into their product in recent years and while some saw them as a lower-echelon bookie when they first landed on the scene, there is no disputing that they have now begun to mix it with the big boys. With a vast range of betting markets – well over 100 for big football matches for instance – they have also produced well-developed live betting and mobile interfaces and Betway also offer live streaming of some sporting events.

Fans of betting coupons are very well catered for at Betway, with both teams to score, win plus both teams to score and various other coupon options available. The aforementioned Useful Stats section is also very handy with a vast array of easy-to-assess statistics covering a wide range of sports from the most popular like football to less obvious ones such as volleyball and futsal. The breadth of information available to bettors is very impressive and, for those willing to put in the homework, it could certainly improve your chances of making a decent net win from your sports bets.

With a strong commitment to customer service, Betway offer 24/7 phone support (which is free to call from UK landlines), and also have a live chat facility. In summary, Betway have developed swiftly into a bookie that really means business and who are willing to invest in their site and products to give you a top quality betting experience.

About Betway

Betway Football Betting Screenshot

When it comes to betting companies, many of the biggest names have a long and illustrious history that was in place well before the launch of online betting. That isn’t always the case, though, as proven by the fact that Betway only launched in 2006, a move that showed their willingness to take advantage of the boom in wagering on the internet. In the years that followed, the company launched across numerous different countries, holding licences to operate in countries including Italy, Argentina and the UK.

A subsidiary of Super Group, Betway sits alongside the likes of Spin Casino as being part of the umbrella company. It has hit the headlines numerous times over the years, such as in October of 2015 when a record £13,209,300 was paid from one of its slot games. They have become well-known thanks to their sponsorship deals of sports teams such as West Ham United, as well as the National Hockey League, helping to improve their brand name recognition.

Launching Into A Crowded Market

In many ways, companies that launch into the betting market without having the prestige associated with a well-established name, such as Ladbrokes or William Hill, or something different to offer, like Betfair’s exchange betting platform, are always going to be fighting an uphill battle. With that in mind, Betway’s decision to launch out of offices in the Gzira area of Malta in 2006 was a brave one. The new company was always going to struggle to break into an online betting sector that was already reasonably well-established by that point.

Things weren’t made any easier for the company when it developed something of a bad reputation during its more formative years. One of the biggest issues was that it had complex bonus terms that seemed to make actually winning the bonus money all but an impossibility. The company moved to correct this issue, changing the management team a number of times as it looked to figure out how best to operate in a way that would allow it to win over new customers. Soon, the company’s reputation began to improve and it was felt as though they were in a position to kick-on and grow the business.

Sponsorship Deals Put Betway In The Public Eye

Having got themsleves into a position where they could compete with the bigger companies from a customer experience point of view, Betway brought in the services of Saatchi & Saatchi to help it develop an advertising campaign that would see them propelled into the upper reaches of betting clientele. It launched a campaign across Europe, gaining new customers as a result. Sponsorship of races such as the Queen Mother Champion Chase during the Cheltenham Festival helped it to win over the horse racing world, for starters.

The company also sponsored events such as Premier League Darts and boxng contest between George Groves and Carl Froch, seeing more and more sports-lovers begin to recognise brand Betway. One of the biggest moves came when Betway sponsored West Ham United, striking a two-and-a-half year deal with the football club in 2015, at a cost of £20 million. At the same time, Betway continued to sponsor horse racing events as though they were going out of fashion, with all of the Kingwell Hurdle (above), Summer Plate, Chester Cup and Lincoln Handicap, amongst others, bearing the Betway name.

Hitting The Headlines

Jackpot in Lightbulbs

In 2015, Dream Bingo, one of the brands of Betway, had a major re-launch, with a new TV advertising campaign as well as a new website leading the way. An online community of customers named Betway’s new online bingo site the best, which was a big headline generator. If that wasn’t enough, a year later came a story that saw people flocking to sign up with the site after one of its customers made the Guinness Book of World Records. Jon Heywood was playing Mega Moolah on the Betway Casino when he won £13,209,300 from a take of 25 pence.

That was the biggest prize paid out to a British punter, earning Betway a huge amount of publicity. The same year, the company moved to show its support for the growing industry of eSports, sponsoring the Swedish Counterstrike team. The Betway management had recognised this niche market long before many of their competitors had done so. This is now one of the industry’s fastest growing sectors. On top of this, the company also sponsored Anderlecht in the Belgian top-flight football league, as well as the country’s equivalent to the FA Cup.

In the years that followed, Betway doubled down on its sponsorship of the likes of the Kingmaker Novices’ Chase, the King Charles II Stakes and a six-year extension to their West Ham sponsorship deal. When Betway became the official betting partner of the Grand National at Aintree, that was seen as another boon. A brand new casino, Spin Casino, was launched under the Betway umbrella, gaining attention when it signed a sponsorship deal with the Spanish La Liga side Léganes, once more seeing them achieve brand recognition.

Part Of Super Group

Betway have offices in Malta, which is where the company’s headquarters are, as well as locations in London, Guernsey and Madrid. Around 600 people are employed by the company, with 1,300 dedicated third-party support staff also ensuring the smooth-running of the business. The betting site is licensed to operate in numerous different locations, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy and Sweden, offering a global presence. It is owned by the parent company Super Group, which was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2022.

Interestingly, it isn’t all that easy to find information about Super Group and Betway. That is to say, for a time, The Betway Group was owned by Rosehall Global, but it isn’t clear whether the Super Group is a re-branding of Rosehall Global or if they bought them out and obtained Betway and Spin Casino as a result. For their part, Super Group combined with Sports Entertainment Acquisition Corp to create a new global gaming company that became listed on the NYSE. As part of the new-look, the company decided to target the US gaming market, which is currently the territory that most companies want to get in on.
